Dan Patrick
Defender of Life Award Recipient
Lieutenant Governor of Texas
Lt. Governor Dan Patrick is the preeminent voice for principled conservative policies in Texas and across America. He was first elected to the Texas legislature in 2006 as a state senator and represented the northwest portion of Houston for eight years. He was then elected lieutenant governor of Texas in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018 and 2022 by nearly 800,000 votes.
His commitment to pro-life policies has been evident throughout his time in the legislature. In 2011, he fought to secure passage of the sonogram bill, estimated to have saved over 250,000 lives. As President of the Senate, he oversaw the most pro-life legislative session in 2021. He prioritized the passage of the heartbeat bill (which prevented nearly all abortions after six weeks), as well as the abortion ban trigger bill, which abolished abortion practices in Texas after Roe v. Wade was overturned.
As a devout Christian, Lt. Governor Patrick worked to have the words “In God We Trust” placed above the doors of the Texas Senate, and he passed legislation to put “Under God” in the Texas Pledge of Allegiance. He also started the largest prison seminary in the world for inmates serving long-term to life sentences. The seminary has now graduated over 100 inmates with a full 4-year seminary degree, and they have hundreds more enrolled in the program.
A committed husband, father, and grandfather, Lt. Governor Patrick has been married to his wife Jan, a former schoolteacher, for 49 years. They have two children, Ryan and Shane, and eight grandchildren
